Sustainable Rivers Program!

The Kansas River has been accepted into
The Sustainable Rivers Program!

FOK friends…..we have a really wonderful thing to tell you…..

Friends of the Kaw has signed on as a partner and is pleased to announce that the Kansas River has officially been accepted into the Sustainable Rivers Program!

The Sustainable Rivers Program is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and The Nature Conservancy partnership. It represents an ongoing effort to reoperate Corps dams to achieve more ecologically sustainable flows, while maintaining or enhancing project benefits. The project is being carried out under a Memorandum of Understanding between the Corps and the Conservancy.

Work will begin this summer to start the literature review and to start to understand historical flows on the Kansas River. Together, with partners all along the river, we will all work to bring the river to a healthier place that meets the needs of the communities. Won’t you please join us in congratulating the Kansas River on acceptance in this very important program? We held a kick off meeting recently and this group came together – representing agencies, non-profits, industry, etc. to discuss the program. This is a long term project that could take years to accomplish….but we hope to see some benefits to the river system within the next decade!

We are thrilled to be a part of this great project for our river – thank you to The Nature Conservancy in Kansas and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Headquarters! Stay tuned as we move ahead….we will keep you posted!
