Kaw Currents: Birds of the Kaw – Thursday, March 19, 2026

Join us for the first Kaw Currents event of 2026 and learn all about birds of the Kansas River region – their habits, migration, and the places they frequent. We’ll learn from Kelly Barth, past president and current secretary of the Lawrence Bird Alliance.  Kelly is also a writer and co-owner of the Raven Bookstore in Lawrence. Kaw Currents: Prairies and the Kansas River – Thursday, May 21, 2026

Join us to learn about the relationship beween prairies and the Kansas River – we’ll explore how water quality reflects changes in the landscape, and what conservation can do in benefiting prairie streams.  We’ll be joined by special guest Chris Janssen, the Freshwater Program Manager for The Nature Conservancy in Kansas. Kaw Currents: Otters on the Kaw – Thursday, September 17, 2026

Join us to learn about otters on the Kansas River with George Frazier, author of Last Wild Places of Kansas and Riverine Dreams: Away to the Glorious and Forgotten Grassland Rivers of America.  Additional information will be posted closer to the event.

All 2026 Kaw Currents events will take place at Sunflower Outdoor and Bike Shop, 804 Massachusetts St. in Lawrence, Kansas. The evening begins with Food and Conversation at 5:30 PM (Purchase dinner or a drink from the Sunflower Cafe then join us on the 2nd floor.). The presentations begin at 6:00 PM.
