When you join Friends of the Kaw you become part of a team of people working to protect and preserve the Kansas River. Why is this important? The Kaw is a major source of drinking water for northeast Kansas and provides habitat for a wide variety of plants and animals. It’s also a recreational treasure – a 173-mile water park where you can fish, float and enjoy nature!
FOK members receive our quarterly newsletter “Kansas River Currents” which contains information about float trips, volunteer opportunities, current advocacy campaigns and other news. Members are always welcome to join scheduled float trips. We also encourage members to help us reach new audiences and by putting us in touch with organizations that may be interested in receiving a presentation about the Kansas River. In the past we have presented to church groups, civic groups, youth groups, and other non-profit organizations.
As a member of Friends of the Kaw you will also be helping to support the Kansas Riverkeeper, a non-governmental advocate responsible for holding the community accountable for the health and condition of the Kaw by investigating polluters, patrolling the river, and educating people about the importance of keeping the Kaw clean and healthy. While as a not-for-profit organization FOK has been successful in receiving grants for certain projects, none of those funds may be used to pay the Riverkeeper for the time required to conduct these activities. If you would like to help provide funds to enable the Riverkeeper to perform her duties we welcome your donation.
