Access Ramp: River Left

Directions:  From I-70 take the Wamego Exit 328 north on K-99 for approximately 9.5 miles. Cross the bridge into Wamego and turn left (west) on Valley Street, the first road before you enter Wamego’s business district. Go one block on Valley Street to the giant silo and turn left on Elm Street.  The entrance to the access park is at the end of Elm St.

The Wamego Access Ramp is also easily accessible from U.S. 24 by turning south on K-99 to Valley Street on the south edge of Wamego. Access is under the north end of the K-99 Bridge on the south end of town.

Access Information:  The ramp area has room for 4-5 vehicles to load and unload boats, 5 parking stalls and one longish pull-through for trailers (2 can crowd in if you’re friendly). It is patrolled and visible to the nearby highway as part of a riverfront park area. There is a wide concrete ramp that scours well. The K-99 bridge provides shade.

Amenities:  Trash can, picnic table, and informational kiosk on site.  Restroom facilities are available, but they are often locked except during summer weekends.  Limited lighting after hours.  The access ramp is located on the edge of the downtown area with easy walking within a few blocks for supplies, restaurants, coffee shops, deli, etc. A great place to explore the local community!

In 2024, Friends of the Kaw installed a kayak and canoe storage locker at the ramp.  The locker is free to use and will hold kayaks and canoes up to 18 feet long.  It is intended for short-term stoarge of boats and gear while users shuttle cars, explore downtown Wamego, or make a supply run.  You must use your own lock.  For questions or more information about the locker, email Friends of the Kaw at info@kansasriver.org.

Paddle Information:  As you approach the Wamego Access from the west, it is often advisable to pass under the K-99 bridge and turn upstream next to the bank to reach the ramp.  The next access is at the Belvue Access Ramp 9.5 miles downstream at river mile 119. The paddle from Wamego to Belvue is a beautiful day trip.  Note the Belvue Low-Head Dam at river mile 120 on river right.
